Sparse, industrial, underground techno - Berlin's Berghain superclub has meticulously shaped its image around this particular style of music, and few artists represent the sound better than one of the club's best known resident DJs, Marcel Dettmann.
Dettmann has just released his long awaited debut album on the club's in-house label, Ostgut Ton, and the minimalistically titled 'Dettmann' sounds like it was not only produced for, but actually recorded in the Berghain's cavernous space. Dark, austere and weighty, the album's 12 tracks are almost entirely constructed from reduced percussive loops, which radiate the primeval energy regularly felt between Berghain's booming speakers.

As a stylistic introduction to the Berghain and his fabled DJ sets, we have asked Marcel Dettmann to pick five of his favourite tracks on Ostgut Ton.
Track released 01-09-2008 on Ostgut Ton
Marcel Dettmann: "My favourite track from Shed's 'Shedding The Past' album. Deep, reduced and heart-felt, 'The Lower Upside Down' is one of the most beautiful and melancholic moments Shed has given me."
Track released 26-05-2008 on Ostgut Ton
Marcel Dettmann: "This is the first track that Norman Nodge has released on Ostgut Ton. Simple and effective. 'Native Rhythm Electric' is really great production which I also have used on my Berghain mix CD."
Track released 09-03-2009 on Ostgut Ton
Marcel Dettmann: "This is by my good friend and occasional production partner Ben Klock. My favourite track from his 'One' album, 'Gold Rush' has a nice, brittle dubstep feel to it."
Track released 04-05-2009 on Ostgut Ton
Marcel Dettmann: "I've always been a great fan of Luke Slater and I was very happy that he came up with a new album for Ostgut. For my he is definitely one of the best techno producers around."
Track released 27-08-2007 on Ostgut Ton
Marcel Dettmann: "One of my definite Ostgut favourites. I always have this in my box as a secret weapon. 'Playground' is perfectly timeless techno - great track."
'Dettman' as well as 'Dettmann Remixed', featuring interpretations by Norman Nodge and Wincent Kunth, are now out on Ostgut Ton. Also brand-new is a Marcel Dettmann remix of Tadeo's 'Winds Of Glory', out now via Tadeo's Cyclical Tracks imprint.
