Our favourites of 2008: 31 free tracks in 31 days.

As the maiden year of zero" draws to a close we can't help but get all misty-eyed and start to reminisce over what an outstanding year 2008 has been. Aside from being the birth year of our venture, 2008 has also been memorable for some truly incredible music.

So we'd like to take advantage of the end of year quiet spell to look back on our favourite 31 tracks for 2008, and tip our hats in appreciation to all of you who have supported zero" this year by giving one of these 31 tracks away for free every day!

our previous selections:

21 // Minilogue - In A Distance
Taken from Animals on Cocoon

'Swedish duo Marcus Henriksson & Sebastian Mullaert formed Minilogue as a non genre specific side-project to their successful progressive trance productions as Son Kite. As Minilogue they have blended electronica, minimalist house and techno most notable on the album Animals, a 2-part effort that explores progressive techno on one side, and beatless ambient on the other. 'In A Distance', the highlight closing track of Animals' first half, simmers and chugs with a prog-tech beat, teamed with shimmering aquatic sounds.'

22 // Tadeo - IO - (Cassy's Movingonmix)
Taken from Cosmos Remixes on Apnea

'Tadeo is riding on the new wave of Spanish techno producers, many of whom are connected with the Net28 family of labels that includes Tadeo's own imprint, Cyclical Tracks. With a strong interest in dub music Tadeo's sound marks itself with a distinct bass-heaviness, perfectly showcased on the track IO. Berlin producer Cassy takes the track deeper and darker, and straight to the danceflor, with a pulsating beat and her distinctive filtered vocals.'

23 // Roman IV - As Time Goes Bye-Bye
Taken from Neues Testament on Playhouse

'Roman Flügel is not only one of Germany's biggest names in electronic music, he is also responsible for bringing forth some of the best house & techno releases over the last 15 years as one of the co-founders of Playhouse and Klang Elektronik labels. 'As Time Goes Bye-Bye' by one of his aliases Roman IV has been a staple on the dancefloors this year with a shimmering nu-disco influenced synths and infectious handclaps.'

24 // Luomo feat. Apparat - Love You All
Taken from Convivial on Huume

'Finnish producer Sasu Ripatti is a man of many monikers, releasing as Vladislav Delay, Uusitalo, and Luomo on many labels including his own imprint Huume. With the release of the album Convivial Ripatti created the most accessible album yet for his pop-house identity Luomo, with a who's who of guests and collaborators. 'Love You All' features Berlin producer Apparat on vocals and is a glorious slice of melancholic synth pop'

25 // Pole - Alles Klar
Taken from Round Black Ghosts on ~scape

'Stefan 'Pole' Betke and Barbara Preisinger' label ~scape has been pushing the boundaries of electronic music since 1999, and the dubstep-influenced label compilation Round Black Ghosts heralded that influence and interest that the genre has created in Berlin's underground. 'Alles Klar' indeed makes this clear, starting as dub-inflected minimal electronica then mutating into a bass-driven and menacing tech-dubstep monster .'

26 // Ellen Allien - Elphine
Taken from SooL on Bpitch Control

'Bpitch Control label head, producer, DJ and undisputed First Lady of German techno Ellen Allien took a refreshing left-hand-turn in May with the release of SooL, a minimal, ambient album full of microsounds and airy soundscapes. Elphine is the most upfront of the album tracks, teaming a minimal techno beat with off-kilter robotic vocals, filtered whistles and distorted sounds.'

27 // Si Begg - Rapid I Movement
Taken from Jetlag and Tinnitus Part 3 on Noodles Recordings

'UK-freestyle breaks renegade Si Begg has been subverting stylistic limitations for many years now through his wonderful Noodles Recordings imprint. In 2008 he added another installment to his increasingly monumental 'Jetlag and Tinnitus' series. 'Rapid I Movement' takes a bleepy old-school theme through diverse mutations on top of a grimy bassline and chopped up breaks that add the classic Si Begg flavour.'

28 // Jimpster - Got A Hold On Your Soul
Taken from Freerange 100 Part Two on Freerange

'2008 has been an incredibly busy and successful year for Jamie Odell and his Freerange label, and while 'Dangly Panther' was probably Jimpster's most played track of 2008, we have set our eyes on a different gem: 'Got A Hold On Your Soul' is a sweet pumping house tune in typical London style, begging you to raise your hands and sing along.'

29 // Alter Ego remixed by Modeselektor - Fuckingham Palace (Modeselektor's SW1A1AA Remix)
Taken from Fuckingham Palace Remixes on Klang Elektronik

'In late 2007 Alter Ego have decided that all-out rave is the thing for 2008, and their ensuing album 'Why Not ?!' has just been as successful in defining the sound of the year as any of their previous efforts. The album's singles have come loaded with high-class remixes done by the likes of Carl Craig, Tiga, or in this case Modeselektor, who take the original 'Fuckingham Palace' to a whole new grime-infected level.'

30 // Andy Vaz - Back To Square One
Taken from the Patrice Scott vs Andy Vaz Split EP on Yore

'Founded in 2007 to replace Andy Vaz' old label Background Records, Yore didn't loose any steam in 2008. Right on time for the recent resurgence of deep house, the label brought us releases by old-school legends Rick Wade or Alton Miller and new-school contenders like Patrice Scott, from whose excellent split release with Andy Vaz we have chosen our first track: 'Back To Square One' has Yore's label owner in high form - a 9 minute house groover which has it all, from Detroitish strings and acid bass to disco brass and funk guitars.'
