| The Shape Of Breaks To Come: An Interview with FaltyDL by gl03 |
| New York's Drew Lustman has won over countless fans last year, mixing up abstract hip-hop, UK garage, and Rephlex-style electronica in his productions for Planet Mu and Ramp Recordings. Right in time for the release of his new EP we conduct a brief Q&A session with the man known to most as FaltyDL. |
|
On rare occasions barriers of time, space and musical cultures seem to melt down, condense and solidify into something new and outrageous at the hands of a gifted individual. Take the example of Drew Lustman, whose recordings as FaltyDL have been among the most hyped of the year 2009.
Growing up in New Haven, Connecticut, didn't exactly predestine Lustman to a career of chopping up all dance music genres ever conceived on the British Isles, adding a large dose of sample-based hip-hop and coming up with a unique musical recipe of his own. Yet this is precisely what he ended up doing, and while his prior experience as a sushi cook and jazz bassist might have helped a bit in the process, the general public had been left largely unprepared for the firework of fresh ideas that was 'Love Is Liability' - his debut album that used UK garage breaks, dubstep bass and dreamy Ceephax synths to conjure up mid-90s rave moods with modern means. |
Leipzig's highly recommendable dub-techno imprint Instabil releases the second volume of its 'File Under Dub' series. Five excellent dub house and techno tracks by young artists such as Modern Walker (ISENDIT.) and Satore (Minuendo). Deep and sweet - definitely one to check out.

Glass Candy return on Jersey City's great Italians Do It Better label with an intense dose of dramatic synth-pop: Johnny Jewel's opulent riffs meet Ida No's characteristicly brittle vocal style for a catchy cross-over of new wave, electro-disco and indie dance. Irresistibly psychedelic!

Turning to great American abstract painter Mark Rothko for inspiration, Montreal's dub techno veteran Deadbeat distils 15 years of electronic dub into 'Radio Rothko', his first mix album appearing on US label The Agriculture.
The level of abstraction and sophistication with which Scott Monteith pulls this off would indeed be deserving of Rothko's patronage. Not only did Monteith choose some of the finest tracks the genre has to offer, he has also dissected and reassembled their elements into a brilliantly crafted flow, much more resembling a concept album than a collection of tracks or a DJ mix.
It is the way how Deadbeat both intricately layers his echoing textures and pays attention to the bigger picture at the same time, which makes 'Radio Rothko' one of the most conceptually sound mix albums ever recorded. Starting out in a subdued 4-by-4 fashion, Monteith lines up Basic Channel, Pendle Coven and Quantec, before peaking with Marko Fürstenberg's intense 'Site 312'. From here he suddenly breaks up the rhythm with Monolake and 2562, arriving at Rhythm & Sound's classic dub reduction 'Mango Drive', before ending the mix on high note with his own dub house track 'Deep Structure'.
Clocking in at just over an hour, 'Radio Rothko' is a beautiful work, both for the uninitiated, who will find many of the genre's undisputed highlights in this mix, as well as for electronic dub's die-hard fans, who will marvel at Deadbeat's sense of dramatic composition. Superb.

Arguably the best digital Dancehall ever to emerge out of the UK featuring all vocalists from the infamous Unity Soundsystem. Produced in Stoke Newington, north east London, on a Casio and a drum machine, the music is totally unique albeit its simplicity and will blow your mind with its deadly groove. Wicked!

7even Recordings' first long player surfaces courtesy of their premier artist, F. With 'Energy Distortion', the young French producer cultivates a sound fusing traditional dub-techno aesthetics (a la Basic Channel) within a new school framework (a la dubstep), resulting in devastating and hypnotic dancefloor material!
Long standing Cocoon member Frank Lorber gathers two of his old Frankfurt mates to unleash a percussive DJ tool with undoubted hit potential. From more minimal tracks like 'Uno' and 'Cuatro' to melodious bass work outs like 'Duo' this EP has it all to cause damage on the floor.

Digital Soundboy releases the long-awaited debut album, 'Foundations' from South London drum and bass/UK bass producer, Breakage. Breakage's first releases appeared nearly 10 years ago on the label, Reinforced, while he was still a teenager, and his releases since have maintained an astonishingly high level of quality. Features 'Vial', a collaboration with fellow South Londoner, Burial.
Scottish bass music producer, Loops Haunt, is getting a serious buzz as of late for his jaw-dropping production antics. Such antics have recently received the attention of LuckyMe, the Glasgow dance music stable whose members include Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Mike Slott, among others. Keep your ears peeled for Loops Haunt in the coming months!

| Jahtari |
|
Over the years Leipzig-based Jahtari has become a cult label for its crossover of lo-fi 8bit sounds and dub, a style which the Jahtari folks themselves call 'digital laptop reggae'. Initially started in 2004 by Disrupt and Rootah as a netlabel, Jahtari has since become a world-wide network of artists with close ties to the UK bass music scene.

| Disrupt |

After a few years of experimenting with different equipment and styles, from Gabber over digital hardcore to electronica, Leipzig's Jan Gleichmar a.k.a. Disrupt came to love dub and reggae with all his heart. In 1998 he met Rootah at a construction site they were both working on, and a few years later the two started the Jahtari label, dedicated to the fusion of lo-fi chiptune sounds and dub reggae....
