emptyset emptyset emptyset Music Producer (MP3 Downloads) Artist caravan
Emptyset is a Bristol based production project formed by James Ginzburg, a.k.a. Ginz, boss of the Multiverse network of labels, and Paul Purgas, a longstanding electronic dj/collector and curator of this year's 'We Can Elude Control' compilation. Their collective agenda has been exploring techno music's diverse influences and compiling them to a studio template focused on tight production and detailed sound design. Inspired by the city's culture of bass lead production as well as the global resurgence of electronic music, the sound has been described as techno meets dubstep folded back onto techno again, a description which is perhaps the most insightful to date. The project owes credit to the classic releases of M-Plant, Sähko and Chain Reaction as well as more recent producers such as Alva Noto, Deathprod and Burial. Emptyset acts as a research project connecting the ideas of a modern dancefloor with experimental approaches to music and its design.

Bristol's emptyset have gained a cult following over the past three years with raw Pan_sonic-style techno and earthshaking, abstract live performances. The latter are documented on 'Material': Three massive freeform audio assaults of fractured basswaves interspersed with ominous silence. Unique.

In a month not short on excellent club-ready releases it was the wealth and quality of experimental electronica recordings that surprised us most. From Mouse on Mars' bastardly bass music mutations over the jazzy timbres of Nicolas Jaar's 'Don't Break My Love' more...

Hard-hitting electronics of the Bristol duo debut on Carsten Nicolai's renowned imprint. Their unmistakable weighty splintering noise more mechanically formed into frictional micro-rhythms, blistering seismo-bass lines lurching at near-bleeps - a perfect synthesis of their two worlds. Recommended.

Two extremely intense variations of Emptyset's incredible recent 'Demiurge' album. First up Paul Jebanasam, who reprocesses the album as a whole with emphasis on guitar noise from Gravenhurst, ex-Vex'd man Roly Porter does a fine job spinning webs of tense cinematic sonics. Wicked.

Emptyset raid their vaults to compile an album of early recordings: Eight tracks (four of them unreleased) of sparcely instrumented, cold and spacious techno that make 'Trace: 2005-2009' a must for fans of Säkho, Sandwell District, or the Prologue's label output. Highly recommended.

The Bristol-duo return with their precision electronics with this latest five-track EP. Less directly forceful than last year's 'Demiurge', it wields its power in unsettling spaces between metallic noise sweeps, throbbing tones and minutely detailed echos. Some of the best experimental electronics we've heard in a while.

Heavyweight Bristolian duo emptyset release their second full-length after 2009's epic self-titled debut and a corker for CLR earlier this year. Uncompromising and brash techno-rooted bass experimentations, a grittier, more primal take on bare electronics of Sähko and Raster Noton. Highly Recommended.

After their outstanding beast of an album 'Demiurge' this year, Emptyset's 'Altogether Lost' gets a further set of remixes. Two from Ben Klock, pumping the original with a bass-fuelled swing featuring claps then sparsely dissected with icey tones, Ripperton's smooth deepness removing the grit. Top.

Two more remixes of emptyset & Cornelius Harris' 'Altogether Lost', the grungy original of which recently came out via Chris Liebing's CLR imprint. Scuba delivers a nicely pulsating big room techno take under his SCB moniker, while Peverelist adds subtle grooves and eerie strings. Recommended.
