Born in Zurich in 1957, Thomas Fehlman has been involved with, and making, electronic music since long before most of us ever bought our first electronic records. In 1979 in the large port city of Hamburg, Fehlmann founded the avantgarde band Palais Schaumburg together with Holger Hiller. The group's name stands for 'Das Palais Schaumburg' in Bonn, the former residence of German chancellors, and was strongly characterized by their avant garde/new wave music and dadaistic attitude. The group made several singles and albums throughout the early 80s and their sound was heavily influenced by funk, especially on albums 'Lupa' and 'Parlez-Vous Schaumburg.' Shortly following the release of their first album 'Palais Schaumburg', Hiller left the band and started his solo career. He was replaced with Moritz von Oswald and vocalist Walther Thielsch. Fehlmann moved to Berlin in 1984 and shortly thereafter Palais Schaumburg split. Not to be deterred, Thomas dedicated himself to his home studio and the sampler (which at the time was in its infancy as a musical instrument), and began releasing music under the moniker of Ready Made. In 1988 he founded the Teutonic Beats label, whose compilations featured early contributions from artists like Jörg Burger, Wolfgang Voigt, Moritz von Oswald, Sun Electric and Westbam. Through the label, Fehlmann became friends with Dr. Alex Paterson of The Orb. Fehlmann later contributed to many Orb releases, becoming a part-time member of the group. In the 90s Fehlmann was a resident at the legendary Tresor club in Berlin. Together with Moritz von Oswald and Juan Atkins he formed 3MB, helping to fuse the Berlin-Detroit connection. Since 1995 he has been involved with the legendary Berlin-based Ocean Club, which has been broadcasting a radio show since 1998, and which recently went worldwide. Turning his attentions towards production in the beginning of the new millenium, Thomas has released some wonderful additions to his catalogue including the solid techno album 'Visions of Blah' and his 2007 album 'Honigpumpe' which was very well received by critics. His most recent release 'One To Three. Overflow; Ninenine/nd' is an experimental album that takes its listeners on a sonic vacation to another world where sleepy melodies and groovy beats rule. The Compilation Pop Ambient 2010 was reviewed:
Kompakt's Pop Ambient compilation series was first started in 2001, at a time when the 90s hype surrounding ambient music had already faded away somewhat. With a line-up of almost exclusively German artists, 'Pop Ambient 2001' managed to invigorate the genre by exploring Kompakt's classic themes of nature vs. technology and avant-garde vs. pop.

Once again Kompakt has assembled an all-star line-up, including genre-defining The Orb and Thomas Fehlmann, Kompakt masterminds Reinhard Voigt and Jürge Paape, and current dub(techno) hotshots Bvdub and Mikkel Metal.

The tracks on display mostly explore the tension between acoustic and synthetic sounds - plucked guitar strings and fragile piano notes are a recurring theme, and Wolfgang Voigt goes as far as using the traditional zither as a main instrument in his track 'Zither und Horn'. More outstanding efforts come from DJ Koze, whose 'Bodenweich' most closely resembles a melancholic pop song, and City Centre Offices artist Marsen Jules, whose great opening track 'The Sound Of One Lip Kissing' is a to the point exercise is contemplative arrangement.

All in all, Kompakt has put together a great anniversary edition for its influential series that should not be missed by any means.
