Founded in 1988 by
Alex Paterson and KLF member Jimmy Cauty, The Orb started their musical journey as ambient and dub DJs in in the deep recesses of London's clubs. The duo's early performances were inspired by ambient and electronic artists of the 1970s and 1980s, most notably ambient visionary Brian Eno and programming wizards Kraftwerk. Though it may not have been intentional, The Orb's psychedelic/electronic sound initially developed a very strong fan base among club goers who were coming off the drug-induced highs typical of the electronic dance floor scene in the 90s. Known for manipulating obscure samples beyond recognition in their albums and concerts, The Orb have been accused by other artists, in particular American female vocalist Rickie Lee Jones, for the unauthorised use of their works. However, similar claims have run rampant amongst other electronic musicians since the inception of sampling and have done nothing to slow down the genre of music, the practice of samling or the group's themselves. The Orb's critical and commercial success in the UK peaked in the early 1990s with their albums 'The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld' and 'U.F.Orb,' which reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart in 1992. The Orb has maintained their 'trippy' science fiction motifs, and despite personnel changes including the departure of Cauty and other Orb members Kris Weston, Andy Falconer, Simon Phillips, and Andy Hughes. Paterson has been the only permanent member in the group's 20 year history, continuing to tour, work and release music as 'The Orb' with the Swiss-German producer
Thomas Fehlmann and later with Martin 'Youth' Glover and Tim Bran of Dreadzone.
