Formed near Munich as a hardcore punk band in the 80's, The Notwist gradually began to embrace a synthesis of classic '80s indie-pop songwriting and dirty electronic backings by way of their respect for artists like for Oval and Autechre. The band, comprised of brothers Markus and Micha Acher (on vocals/guitar and bass, respectively) plus programmer/keyboard player Martin Gretschmann and drummer Martin Messerschmidt, released their self-titled debut album in 1989, and followed it up with 1992's 'Nook,' both of which were in-your-face punk LPs. The Notwist's third album '12' marked the group's introduction with electronics/computers/sequencing, and the chord structures and vocals of Markus Acher moved The Nowtist from the directness of punk into the world of alternative music. Following the release of '12' the band gained an American distribution deal with Zero Hour, and after '12' was reissued, the group's fourth album 'Shrink' came to be in 1998. The Notwist's return in 2009 with 'Sturm' on their own label Alien Transistor. 'Sturm' is a pleasant and solid addition to the band's catalogue and witnesses them doing away with vocals altogether and focussing on their instrumental production skills. The album is a perfect companion for those looking for an introspective listening experience.

An exquisite soundtrack album by the always brilliant Notwist, 'Sturm' is a reflective instrumental journey, but not without some sweet pop melodies thrown in for good measure. Lovely.
