A love for percussion, in particular the commanding thwack of a snare drum, is what first pulled Stacey Pullen towards music. As a teenager Stacey's interest in all things drum related led him on travels around the U.S.'s deep south playing the snare drum in high school and later at Tennessee State University. It wasn't until college at TSU, however, that Stacey discovered the Detroit Techno movement just as it was coming into full swing. In awe of the tracks coming out of Detroit, specifically those by Derrick May, Stacey focussed his attention on producing techno tracks of his own. It wasn't long before he became involved with May's Transmat label. Fortuitously, a remix for
The Prodigy that was not accepted by the band went on to become Stacey's first hit and the birth of his Kosmic Messenger alter ego. Removing all of The Prodigy's samples from the track, Stacey kept only his own musical additions. This soundscape/4-to-the-floor hit track was put out on May's "Fragile" imprint and sent Stacey to Amsterdam for a month, which quickly turned into a year. The experience playing abroad invigorated him so much so that when he returned to Detroit a year later he continued producing and performing his style of jazzy/soundscape techno, and hasn't looked back since. Though Pullen is perhaps best known for his prowess as a crowd moving DJ, his releases as Kosmic Messenger, specifically 'The Kollected Works of Kosmic Messenger,' as well as 'Today is the Tomorrow You Were Promised Yesterday,' released on Virgin records imprint, Science, are testament to his skills as a producer and should be heard by all techno fans. Keep your ears open for Stacey Pullen who, according to himself, has only released the tip of his musical iceberg.
