Nouvelle Vague, meaning 'new wave' in French, is a French musical collective led by producer/arranger duo Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux, and features the vocals of various sultry chanteuses from all over the world. Owing to their name and most all that it suggests, Nouvelle Vague is all about putting a stamp on their French 'artiness' and having that reflect on the source of their music which are all covers of punk rock, post-punk, and new wave songs. What makes these covers particularly unique, however, is that they are all delivered in a '60s bossa nova-style (bossa nova meaning 'new wave' in Portuguese). Have you ever wondered what the likes of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Joy Division, Modern English, Depeche Mode, Blondie, XTC, New Order, Echo & the Bunnymen (to name just a few) might sound like if they were bossa nova bands? Well, they would sound a lot like Nouvelle Vague but probably not as good...which is a coveted tier for a cover band to reach--the point at which an original piece of music takes on an entirely new life through creative reinterpretation. Their cover of Depeche Mode's 'Master and Servant,' off of their third and latest album Nouvells Vague 3 is a wonderful example of how a cover band can succeed with what most cover bands (by their very nature) lack: originality.
