Despite being merely in his early twenties, George 'Lemos' Laimos is recognised as one of the major new talents of the Greek electronic scene. Like his compatriot and good friend
Kreon, he hails from Athens and has spent the majority of his life either making or playing music. Seven years' piano gave him an early musical grounding before switching to the other end of the scale (and fulfilling a teenage dream) by playing guitar in a punk band. In his later teen years he started getting into jazz and funk sounds and musicians like Booker T and the MGs, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Benny Goodman and Louis Prima, whilst simultaneously building up a collection of house and techno. Listening to this new music, and imagining how his own sound might develop, he bought his first drum machines and synths, learnt how to play clarinet and saxophone and started experimenting. He realised that there were no confines in making electronic music and soon fell in love with it. Lemos' love of experimentation is evident in all of his productions, form early collaborations with Kreon such as the 'Roza' and 'Lookooshere' EP's on
Resopal, to more recent work on
Cecille Numbers or
Connaisseur. A year after first emerging, its still a challenge to truly define the Lemos sound - is it techno? Is it house? Is there a minimal taste at the same time? 2009 has seen him move some way in defining this, in the form of imminent record label Orpheus, a collaboration with Kreon that recognises the burgeoning talent of their young Greek contemporaries, and aims to develop and disperse their take on the 'Greek Sound'. Whilst the world waits in anticipation of whatever that may be, Lemos sophisticated live set will continue to inspire crowds with upcoming key dates including Panorama Bar and Fabric.
