Growing up in the Norwegian town of Tromsø, far above the arctic circle, has given Geir Jenssen the chance of developing a unique approach to electronic music, distinctly removed from its common club context. Recording as Biosphere since 1991, Jenssen's music is strongly influenced by nature and his arctic surroundings, often incorporating field recordings and sounds of ice and water. His more than a dozen albums have gained Jenssen a large international following and his 1997 album 'Substrata' is widely regarded as one of the defining works of ambient music. Fans of Jenssen's music will however have to wait a bit longer to hear one of his famous live performances as he recently declared on his web page: 'There will be no more Biosphere concerts in 2008. I am tired of flying. I hate airports, security checks, unhealthy food, air conditioning, hotels, etc. Back to nature!'
