Anthony Shakir, Martyn, Débruit, DJ Hell
While the winter cold clamps down on the European mainland, we luckily have great music to warm our hearts and keep our feet moving. Besides Anthony 'Shake' Shakir's highly recommended 'Frictionalism' compendium, many more excellent releases have come our way more...
the Editor, 7 months ago via zero-inch.com
An impressive body of work like Anthony 'Shake' Shakir's deserves an equally impressive tribute: 35 of Shake's best tracks, originally released via his own Frictional imprint and Dan Bell's 7th City, have been carefully selected, remastered and compiled in this essential volume.

All of Shake's ground-breaking classics are included in this admirable effort by Amsterdam's Rush Hour crew: 'Arise', 'Get A Feeling', 'My Computer Is An Optimist', 'The Floor Filler', as well as a previously unreleased track, 'The Other One'.

Frequently regarded as one of Detroit's most underrated producers, Anthony Shakir has been a big influence on the sound of Motor City techno over the past two decades: Having started his career with Juan Atkins and Metroplex, as a label manager, engineer and recording artist, Shakir has worked with all the Detroit greats from Derrick May to Carl Craig, and even produced an album with legendary German new wave band F.S.K. in 2004.

His stripped down house and techno tracks often take inspiration from hip-hop and funk, and indeed he has displayed proficiency in producing downtempo breaks (check 'Roaming') as well as seminal electro cuts ('Fact Of The Matter'). Shake has also been one of the first Detroit techno artists to fully embrace the beat editing possibilities of digital production, evident e.g. on the mind-blowing 'One Beat (Just Won't Do)'.

'Frictionalism' is a lovingly crafted tribute to a true musical innovator and an essential piece of electronic music history. Don't miss.
