Darren J. Cunningham, better known as London-based producer Actress, managed to create quite a stir lately, both with his admirably freestyle Werk Discs label, as well as with his own productions, most notably his stunning debut album 'Hazyville'. In 2010 Actress has turned to Honest Jon's for the release of his equally acclaimed second album 'Splazsh'.

Actress has amazed us all this year with his ability to think outside the box, with music that seemed to transgress all boundaries of style and genre, space and time. Releasing his sophomore album 'Splazsh' on equally free-spirited label Honest Jon's was a stroke of genius, far expanding Actress' audience beyond the narrow confines of the electronic music community.
An audience the London-based producer is fully deserving of, since he managed to create a unique signature sound, as purposefully lo-fi as it is inspired, from influences as disparate as late 70s synth music, funk, dubstep and techno.
The album's single, 'Maze', perfectly epitomises Actress' unique approach. Its synth melodies hark back to the days of early Sheffield electronica, its beats allude to both classic electro and cutting-edge dubstep. Nostalgic and futuristic in equal measure, 'Maze' stood out like no other track this year.
